About Us

Message from the Vice-Chancellor and President

A1-Vice-Chancellors-Message-small.jpg

We have come a long way together, but further challenges lie ahead. Nevertheless, if we face them with the same determination that we have shown in the past two decades, we will be playing our part in the fight against global warming. We will be making CUHK a better place both for ourselves and for those who come after us. We will also be setting a fine example for Hong Kong as a whole.

Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President

The quest for sustainability is, without a doubt, one of the greatest challenges of our time.  Many countries around the world are united in the struggle against the growing threat posed by global warming, with its potentially catastrophic consequences: hunger, growing inequality, and the depletion of natural, social and cultural resources.  As a responsible global citizen, CUHK has long been determined to play its part in mitigating the effects of climate change, and is an enthusiastic campaigner for the benefits of sustainability.

We already have a firm foundation on which to build.  In 2000, we were the first local tertiary institution to conduct a campus environmental audit.  In 2010, we adopted our Campus Master Plan, which set out what we needed to do to build a sustainable campus.  We have implemented policies and programmes that place sustainability at the centre of our university life.  These programmes have not only changed the way we operate now, but will also shape the University's future development.  We have also striven to ensure that every member of the University appreciates what we are doing, and why we are doing it.  Two decades ago, we set out to show the way ahead. I am proud to say that the University rose enthusiastically to this great challenge.  Our staff and our students now vie to contribute ideas and proposals for incorporating sustainability into our work and into our daily lives.
