About CU Green Buddies
CUHK is committed to becoming Hong Kong’s greenest campus and has pledged in its Campus Master Plan to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 20% per capita by 2025 (from the campus base figure of 2005). While the University continues to make its buildings and operations more energy efficient and environmentally-friendly, support from a green community is crucial for making all the other measures effective, and we need as many individuals as possible to adopt green practices in their daily lives and promote them.

In 2011, we launched the ‘Green Office Programme (GO!)’ to promote green office practices. To reach out further, we would also like to promote some simple green practices that everyone, as an individual, can take to help the environment. We have selected 6 easy and effective actions that any individual member of the CUHK community can take. Sign up as a CU Green Buddy today by committing to take these 6 actions in your daily life!

Your commitment counts. Let’s make a big difference together as CU Green Buddies!

Why become a CU Green Buddy?
By becoming a CU Green Buddy, you can:

What do I have to do as a Green Buddy?

The 6 Actions
I will turn off electrical appliances/equipment (e.g. lights, computers, air conditioners) that will not be used when I leave a room.

Do you know ...
Leaving appliances on standby mode everyday generates at least 105.9kg carbon emissions per year.

I will use the stairs to walk up one floor or walk down two floors.

Do you know ...
Even when walking slowly, you burn calories 2-3 times faster when you are climbing stairs than walking briskly on level ground.
Source

I will try my best to avoid wasting food (e.g. by requesting less rice at canteens).

Do you know ...
Food wasted by Hong Kong in 2010 (around 1.2 million tonnes) can feed 17,520,000 people for one year.
Source

I will try my best to avoid using disposable containers (e.g. by bringing my own water bottle to events, or by supplying my own cup and lunchbox when buying takeaways).

Do you know ...
122 tonnes and 36 tonnes of plastic bottles were disposed to the landfill per day by the domestic sector and commercial & industrial sectors respectively in 2011.

I will walk to cover short distances on campus instead of driving or taking the school bus.

Do you know ...
You'll save ~270g of carbon emissions for each km you don't drive.

I will minimize waste generation by practicing the 6R Principles (Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair and Recycle/Recover).

Do you know ...
In 2010 alone, 445 tonnes of newspaper was dumped to Hong Kong landfills each day. For each tonne of recycled paper, we save: 18 trees, 7,700 gallons of water, 2.5 cubic meters of landfill space and 1,925 gallons of oil.
If ALL 445 tonnes of newspaper were recycled, we would have saved 8010 trees, 3 million gallons of water, 855,000 gallons of oil and 1,122 cubic meters of landfill space every day! Producing recycling paper also creates 74% less air pollution and 35% less water pollution than producing paper from virgin fibres.
